Hello All! I hope your Pride is going well so far. This week, I want to discuss Aspec Pride Flags. I’ll be talking about the history, the colors and their meaning, and other fun things I find out about them. A disclaimer is that because our Aspec family is forever growing, I won’t be able to include everyone. But, just know, you are loved and are valid and I’m sorry if I don’t put your identity in the discussion.
First, let’s take a look at the agender flag! The agender flag was created in 2014 by Salem X (Tumblr user transrants). The flag is made up of seven stripes, two black stripes on the bottom and top, with gray stripes on the inside next to the black, two white stripes on the inside by the gray stripes, and a green stripe in the middle. According to the article on Queer in the World, the black and white stripes represent the lack of gender. The gray stripes represent semi-genderless, and the green stripe represents nonbinary genders. In 2021, Mars created some additional Agender flag designs to expand the color palette. The colors that are made in the alternate flags also have meanings. For convenience, I won’t list out the alternate designs and the color listings of these additional designs, but I will attach the article that has these things listed below.
Next, I’ll talk about the aromantic flag. The aromantic flag was also created in 2014 by Tumblr user Cameron. The flag is made up of five stripes, dark green on the top, followed by light green, followed by white, followed by gray, and a black stripe on the bottom. The stripe colors on the flag represent the following; the dark green stripe represents aromanticism, the light green stripe represents the aromantic spectrum, the white stripe represents QPRs and aesthetic attraction (and maybe other forms of attraction besides romantic?), the gray stripe represents demiromantic or grayromantic people, and the black stripe represents the sexuality spectrum. The aromantic flag we see today wasn’t the original design! The first design was made of four stripes, colored with orange, green, black, and yellow. If you want to learn more about the aromantic flag, check out the link below!
Next, let’s talk about the asexual flag! The asexual Flag was created in 2010 by the AVEN user, standup. The asexual flag is made of four stripes, the top stripe being purple, followed by white, followed by gray, and the bottom stripe being black. The purple stripe represents community, the white stripe represents allosexual allies and partners, the gray stripe represents demisexuality and graysexuality, and the black stripe represents asexuality. If you would like to learn more about the asexual flag, check out the link below!
Let’s talk about the demisexual flag! The demisexual flag was created in 2010, and the original creator is unknown. The demisexual has a purple stripe in the middle, dividing the flag in two halves. The top half is white and the bottom half is gray, and there is a black triangle that comes from the left side. The black color represents asexuality, the gray color represents demisexuality, the white represents sexuality, and the purple represents community. It is said that the triangle on the demisexual flag is based on the AVEN logo! If you would like to learn more about the demisexual flag, check out the link below!
Next is the demiromantic flag! The demiromantic flag’s creation history is unknown except that in 2011, AVEN added the term demiromantic onto their website. The demiromantic has a green stripe in the middle, dividing the flag in two halves. The top half is white and the bottom half is gray, and there is a black triangle that comes from the left side. The black color represents sexuality, the gray color represents demiromanticism and grayromanticism, the white represents platonic and aesthetic attraction (and maybe other forms of attraction?) and QPR’s, and the green represents the aromantic spectrum. Like the demisexual flag, it is said that the triangle on the demiromantic flag is based on the AVEN logo! If you would like to learn more about the demiromantic flag, check out the link below!
One of the last flags I’ll talk about is the graysexual flag. The graysexual flag was created in 2013 by Milith Rusignuolo. The flag has purple stripes on the top and bottom, two gray stripes on the inside next to the purple stripes, and a white stripe in the middle. The purple on the stripes represents asexuality, the gray stripes represent demisexual attraction, and the white represents allosexuality. Learn more about the flag’s meaning using the link below!
The final flag I want to discuss is the grayromantic flag. The grayromantic flag’s most popular design has no recorded creator or creation date. However, three other designs were made by artists Angel, Apollo, and Nyoomster in 2020 and 2021. The flag has green stripes on the top and bottom, two gray stripes on the inside next to the purple stripes, and a white stripe in the middle. The green on the stripes represents aromanticism, the gray stripes represent demiromantic attraction, and the white represents alloromanticism. I don’t have a link talking about the grayromantic flag directly, but I do have a link talking about being grayromantic that I’ll attach below.
I hope this was somewhat fun, and again I apologize if your flag isn’t here. I may do a part two post in the future to include more flags. If you have any thoughts to add, agree or disagree, have a specific flag you want to see in a part two, or have any questions to ask, please reach out to me through social media or email.
Thank you for reading and stay true to yourself!
